Fans of tea brand PG Tips are devastated now the much beloved Monkey, voiced by Ben Miller, is no longer appearing in the adverts.

PG Tips confirmed Monkey had been retired as of May 1, 2024, releasing an official statement regarding the character who appeared in several comedic adverts alongside Johnny Vegas. The statement on Twitter/X led to a flood of tributes for the "rascally puppet".

The statement read: "In case you were wondering, the rascally puppet and those pyramid teabags are having a well-deserved retirement. Our new machines in Manchester are popping out bags that give the best flavour with the fastest infusion."

This week, someone took to Reddit's r/CasualUK fourm to express their surprise at discovering Monkey had retired. And the thread was packed full of comments asking for Monkey's return.

Some blamed themselves for Monkey's disappearance, with one writing: "Advertisers know their audience so realistically if we've stopped responding to this sort of advert, it's our fault he's gone!" Another wrote: "I remember having the toy as a kid, used to love making him put his hand in his mouth. Hours of entertainment."

Viewers of the new PG Tips advert said they "don't get it" and demanded the return of the Miller and Vegas double act. The new advert features actor and rapper Ashley Walters, who rose to fame as a member of So Solid Crew but is perhaps best known for playing Dushane Hill in the crime drama Top Boy.

One Reddit user wrote in response: "Makes me realise how good the old ads were, and I never gave an f about tv ads." Another added: "OK PG Tips, I seriously don’t like the fact you immediately got rid of Monkey and Al and just replaced them with two men talking to each other and then just leaving the house altogether. Can’t you just do an advert where Monkey and Al return?"
