The victims in the murder of two people in a sleepy village in Essex have been named.

Officers were called to Cambridge Road in Ugley, Bishop's Stortford, on Tuesday evening where a woman in her 50s and a man in his 20s were found injured. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

A close friend named the victims as mother and son Maria Nugara and Giuseppe 'Joe' Morreale. The friend of Maria's, who didn't wish to be named, said: "She was an amazing woman, she was kind, caring, and had such a beautiful nature, and she just does not deserve what has happened to her, nor does Joe. Everybody is just so shocked. I have known her for nine years. I know the whole family."

Speaking of Maria's son Joe, she said: "He definitely does not deserve to be dead, neither of them do." She added: "Maria was a beautiful person, she would not hurt a fly, not a fly, she was always there for her family, always. Lovely woman, it is so sad, just awful, I can't believe this."

Flowers have been left at the entrance to the front gates of the large, detached property in acres of land on the edge of the village of Ugley in Essex. A friend laying flowers at the front of the house said: “She was a beautiful person inside and out to be honest. She didn’t deserve to be murdered is all I can say.”

Her note read: “To my beautiful friend Maria, words cannot describe how we are all feeling. Tragically and brutally taken away from us all. Your son by your side defending you, Guiseppe [sic] a true Hero. May you rest in peace together. Miss you very much.”

‌A police car and other vehicles could be seen parked up the driveway of a gated property on Cambridge Road today. Open black gates at the front of the house lead to a driveway to the property set in sprawling grounds. Forensics officers in hazmat suits could be seen outside the property.

‌Neighbours spoke of their shock at the incident. They said the family were private who kept themselves to themselves. Linda Cooling, 57, lives a few doors down from Woodlands where the two victims are believed to have lived, she said: "They were always a very secretive family, we never really saw them.”

‌One local resident who wished to remain anonymous, said: "They were a very private family, they have high fences and big gates. She added: "They kept themselves to themselves. The only way I really knew anything about them at all was because Maria used to sell eggs.

‌"She knocked on the door and said would you be interested in buying eggs on a regular, and I said yes, so that is how I know about Maria. She added: "I used to speak to the young lad a couple of times.

‌"Their dogs got out one time and they came into our garden, and he came looking for them. We did not get involved with them because they did not want you to be involved." When asked what she thought about what had happened she said: "I was shocked, so shocked."

‌A 63-year-old man from Ugley has been arrested on suspicion of their murder and remains in custody.

Essex Police confirmed no one else is being sought in connection to the incident. In an earlier statement, Detective Inspector Lydia George said: “My thoughts are with the loved ones of the two people who were killed in Ugley last night. This will be an unimaginably difficult time for them and they will be supported by specialist officers.

“I know this incident will cause concern among within the local community but I want to reassure them that we have a team of experienced detectives and staff investigating. At this stage we do not believe this incident poses a risk to the wider public and we’re not looking for anyone else in connection with it."
