Shocking footage shows the moment an 80 mph gust of wind pushed an airliner away from its boarding gate in the midst of a storm.

The American Airlines plane was connected to a boarding bridge at Dallas Fort Worth Airport in Texas when high winds caused it to decouple from the structure and slide across the tarmac. The viral video shows the aircraft leave the spot where it was parked, hooked up to the boarding bridge and head off across the apron as storm winds tossed it like a toy.

The wind of the massive aircraft barely misses the bridge as the plane is blown sideways with one door open by the gust. In a statement, American Airlines said several of their aircraft were affected by severe weather, including "straight-line wind gusts up to 80mph (around 128km/h). There were no injuries."

"Our maintenance team is currently conducting thorough inspections and will make any needed repairs," the airline added. Storms battered the region on Thursday leaving more than 275,000 homes and businesses in Texas, Kentucky and other US states without power.

The airport said around 500 flights were cancelled due to the weather. Almost 200 more flights were cancelled at Dallas Love Field Airport, according to the FlightAware website.

Cars in Houston crawled through flooded highways while the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office confirmed a 16-year-old boy had died when a home under construction began to shift and then collapsed during a thunderstorm in the Houston suburb of Magnolia. The teen was an employee of the construction company and was authorised to be on the site, according to the statement.

A school district in East Houston issued a shelter-in-place order and directed buses with students back to their campuses in the afternoon until the weather subsided. It comes after the region was hit by destructive storms over the weekend causing deaths in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, North Carolina and Virginia.

Meanwhile, An Aer Lingus plane was filmed blowing sideways as it attempted to land at Dublin Airport during a massive storm last month. The footage shows the plane as it approaches the runway during high winds as millions of people across the British Isles were battered by the storm that saw gusts of up to 70mph.

The EU Plane Spotters YouTube channel has shared the clip of the plane heading into Dublin Airport as it is blown from side to side before briefly making contact with the ground. The plane then quickly pulls away from the tarmac and straightens up as it soars back into the air, reported DublinLive.
