Fiorentina and Inter were playing in Serie A when midfielder Edoardo Bove collapsed on the field, with the match subsequently suspended

Fiorentina’s match against Inter Milan was suspended after Viola star Edoardo Bove collapsed on the pitch.

According to reports from those watching the game, the midfielder - on loan from Roma - collapsed with no one around him. Fellow players are said to have been visibly upset as paramedics attended to the 22-year-old.

Players from both sides rushed towards the youngster after he went to ground. A number of them were seen gathering round, with reports that some were in tears, and Fiorentina keeper David de Gea later wrote ’God please’ on social media along with a praying hands emoji.

The match was goalless at the time, with a little over 16 minutes on the clock. Inter and Fiorentina both sit in the upper reaches of the Serie A table behind league leaders Napoli. "Forza Edoardo. We’re all with you," Serie A’s official account wrote

According to Sky Italia, Bove was breathing but unconscious after being taken to hospital. The same publication later reported that early indications suggested the midfielder had regained consciousness, but at the time of writing there has been no official confirmation.

Sky Italia notes that Bove collapsed while the game was paused for an unrelated matter. He is said to have bent down to tie his shoelace shortly before collapsing.

Bove’s team-mate Andrea Colpani was among those seen in tears after the player collapsed. Eventually, Colpani and the rest of the Fiorentina and Inter players still on the pitch were sent back to their changing rooms, with fans reported to have begun leaving the stadium shortly after.

"The match will not resume and is postponed to a date to be determined," a Serie A statement read. "With the game interrupted, Bove collapsed to the ground and the situation immediately appeared very serious. An ambulance took the player away, we await news "

Bove has been a regular for Fiorentina since joining on loan during the summer transfer window. He scored his first Viola goal in October in a 5-1 victory over parent club Roma.

A number of supporters sent well-wishes on social media. "I hope they can help him. Awful, awful news to read today. Still holding hope the doctors can heal him," one wrote.

"Thoughts with Bove, his family and @acffiorentina," wrote another. "We should suspend this match. The players were shaken. They are people too."

Supporters of other clubs also shared messages of support after learning of the news. "Praying for Bove. Everyone deserves to go back home to their family," wrote one.
