And they were hoping to make Messi the highest-paid player in American top-flight history.

But Marca claimed the 35-year-old is expected to stay with PSG and sign a contract extension.

Messi's deal in France runs out in the summer, but the Ligue 1 champions want to keep the ex-Barcelona star.

And the Parisians also want to improve his £700,000-a-week wages.

But Inter Miami manager Phil Neville refused to rule out the possibility of signing the superstar when asked this week.

He said: "We want to bring the best players in the world to this club and he is probably the best player, so for us the landscape has not changed at all.

"With any deal for any DP (Designated Player) of that level, it’s complicated. It takes time.

Miami captain Gregore was also quizzed about Messi and reckons there's a chance of the Argentine moving across the pond.

He admitted: "Why not? I believe it could happen.

"Players around the world view MLS as a great league.

"If Messi comes, I would be happy because I like to play with the best and learn from them."
