Who was Terry Wogan?

Born Michael Terence Wogan in Limerick, Ireland on August 3, 1938, Sir Terry Wogan was a much-loved TV and radio star.

The national treasure was best known for his hugely popular Radio 2 breakfast show, which he hosted from 1993 until 2009.

Called Wake Up With Wogan, the show ran Monday to Friday from 7am and at its peak pulled in 8M listeners daily.

When Terry wasn't busy being Britain's No. 1 broadcaster, he lived a cosy home life with his wife Helen Joyce.

What else was Terry Wogan known for?

In addition to his weekday radio show, Terry was known for his work on television.

This included his own BBC One chat show called Wogan, which saw him chatting to top celebrities.

Terry was also known for presenting the game show Blankety Blank.

How did Terry Wogan die?

In January 2016, Sir Terry Wogan KBE DL passed away at the age 77.

The veteran telly died after losing his battle with cancer.

Family and friends of the TV legend paid their respects during a private service a few weeks after the Children In Need star died.

A memorial was also held at Westminster Abbey on September 27, 2016.

When did Terry Wogan host Children In Need and Eurovision?

Wogan hosted the very first Children In Need telethon back in 1980.

During his time on the programme, he worked alongside Sue Lawley and Esther Rantzen.

Over the years, Wogan helped raise an incredible amount of money for the non-profit organisation.

Not only did he donate his hosting wages to the cause, he also made some cash with a charity single Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth, which he performed with Aled Jones.

The TV star threw himself into auctions, sponsored activities and panel comedy shows.

The much-loved TV personality continued to work on the show each year up until 2015.

Two months prior to his passing, Terry pulled out of presenting the charity fundraiser due to health reasons.

What is the Terry Wogan Fundraiser of the Year Award?

In 2016, the BBC launched the Terry Wogan Fundraiser of the Year Award to honour him.

The public can vote for someone who has done something extraordinary.

The winner is then announced during the Children In Need show.
