With the cost of living crisis continuing to take a toll, the increased cost of fuel has proven to be a cause of concern for many drivers up and down the UK. Drivers looking to cut back where and when they can could well save as much as £406 on fuel costs each year, simply by trying out a lesser-known petrol hack.

As previously reported by the Daily Star, experts from Hippo Leasing have now sought to lend a helping hand, and have revealed how British motorists could save £406.24 on fuel costs if they follow one simple yet apparently effective piece of advice.

These experts analysed how much drivers might be able to save by searching for the best offers within a five-mile radius, using helpful apps such as PetrolPrices. They discovered this could help motorists save as much as £25.39 on a tank.

This saving, which was in Belfast, saw people drive some 3.6 miles from the city centre for cheaper fuel, while drivers in Newcastle could save as much as £14 on a tank. In third place was Coventry, where drivers could pull in savings of £13.94.

Tom Preston, at Hippo Leasing, advised: "Don't wait for your dashboard light to flash to tell you to fill up. It will cost you on average 35p to drive an extra few miles to a cheaper station in the area.

Other ways to save money on petrol include driving smoothly, decreasing your speed and thinking carefully about how you're using your brakes.

David James, sales director at Right Fuel Card, explained: "Using brakes less is a popular fuel-saving technique as it maximises your car's stored momentum and energy.

"This can be done by thinking ahead and taking your foot off the accelerator in advance, to prevent slamming. We do not recommend that you avoid using your brakes completely as this can of course be dangerous.

"It's also possible to allow the regenerative braking in an electric vehicle to handle most of the braking for you."
