An expert has revealed their top tips for adding fabric conditioner to a wash to make sure the clothes get the best of the product.

Getting freshly cleaned clothes out of the wash is a great feeling, as you quickly spot the softness and fresh smell wafting from your garments.

But, adding fabric conditioner to the wash at the wrong time can actually cause the product to become ineffective which could leave your clothes not feeling soft at all.

An expert from popular app Laundry Heap has shared what can be done to ensure your clothes come out of the wash feeling as soft and smelling as fresh as possible.

The pro has revealed that the timing of when you add the fabric conditioner is crucial and it should be added at a different time to the initial detergent.

The expert told The Express: "Many people believe that fabric softener should be added to your washing at the same time as detergent. This is incorrect.

"Adding softener during a wash cycle will remove the chemical residue that makes your clothing soft, therefore making it ineffective."

So, to avoid it becoming ineffective you should actually add the fabric softener during the rinsing stage of the wash after the temperature has risen and the detergent has been used in the wash.

You can add this in mid-wash by holding down the unlock button on your appliance after the detergent has been dispensed.

Then, just add a capful of fabric conditioner into the drum of the machine and then you can just resume the wash which will allow the conditioner to work its magic in the final stages of the cycle.

The expert said: "Adding fabric softener to your wash can remove some of those harsh minerals, resulting in softer clothing."
