Pilots working for Air Europa are staging a strike over ongoing labour disputes with union officials saying that the airline has "zero interest" in resolving the issues.

Yorkshire Live reports that around 340 pilots from airports with Air Europa bases across Spain are planning to stage walkouts on May 1,2,4 and 5.

This could cause disruption for many Brits looking to getaway for the upcoming May bank holiday and the King's coronation.

Hundreds of Air Europa flights, that regularly fly from Gatwick could be cancelled, or face long delays.

However, there may be a glimmer of hope, as Local.es reports the airline is required to provide minimum services in accordance with Spanish law.

Spanish pilots union Sepla called for the strikes on Thursday, a statement from them reads: "This measure responds to the tension and labour conflict generated by Air Europa management playing with workers' rights."

It went on to explain that pilots "feel discriminated" by the company.

Sepla added: "Giving in to these pressures from managers would have been irresponsible with the professional and personal future of the group of pilots."

Air Europa has not commented on the ongoing dispute, but reports from the Europa Press news agency say that a leaked internal memo sent to staff described the strike as "irresponsible and selfish".

The memo also accuses Sepla union members of planning to strike "since the very start" regardless of how the labour negotiations panned out.
