Three police officers have been left injured in a frenzied knife attack after they turned up at a home for a welfare check.
Cleveland Police were called to a residential street in the town of Billingham, Teesside on Friday night after receiving reports of concern for an adult male.
When they attended the scene, officers found a man with a knife who became aggressive towards officers.
Two of the officers then received puncture wounds, while another also suffered a slash wound. All three were taken to hospital, where they received stitches.
A 34-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and was taken to hospital for minor injuries.

They told Teesside Live: "I was gobsmacked at first - but the bobbies were so calm. I presume there were plain clothed bobbies too.
"Then the ambulance came and then the dogs came, but I don’t think they got out. From first seeing the lights to it being clear, it was about 40 minutes."
Others said they were woken up by police lights and sirens late at night and in the early hours of the morning.
A 75-year-old who has lived on the street for 40 years said the area was typically safe and described it as a shock to see so many police vehicles, saying such incidents only happened "once in a blue moon".
A visible police presence remained in the area on Saturday.
