AN animal expert has an urgent warning for dog owners ahead of summer road trips.
Zack Notes is alerting all holidaymakers over the need for proper ventilation and space in pet carriers, otherwise your pup could overheat or suffocate.
The dog guru, from Animal Matchup, has a series of must-know travel tips for keeping your pup safe on a journey, emphasising that preparation is key.
And as summer holidays approach, Zack says there is one very essential item you need to pack if travelling with a four-legged friends.
He explains that safe travelling gear is a must.

Pet carriers or seat belt harnesses help to keep dogs safe while on road trips, and packing a pet-friendly first aid kit is also a great idea in case of any injuries.
Zack said: “If using a carrier, choose a well-ventilated carrier that is the appropriate size for your dog.
"If your dog does not like to travel in a crate, using a well-fitted seat belt harness can protect them in the event of a crash."
However, as temperatures heat up - the size must be right and the ventilation should be tip-top.
It has to have enough room for your pet to move around in and plenty of gaps for it breathe.
Otherwise, on a long and hot journey your dog could overheat or suffocate and tragically die.
The pet expert has plenty of other useful tips to ensure a smooth journey with pets.
Firstly, he says: "a pre-trip vet checkup isn't just a good idea. It is necessary.
"You want to ensure your furry friend is ready for an adventure. Get a copy of your pet’s vaccination records at this visit."
Zack added: "If your furry friend deals with travel anxiety or motion sickness, now is the time to mention it to the vet and consider appropriate medications or natural remedies."

Next, pup owners need to think about travel-ready food.
It's important, Zack warns, to avoid sudden diet changes which could upset your dog's stomach. You should consider stocking up on their usual food.
"Consistency is vital", he says.
Another thing to consider before road trips is letting your pet exercise as tiring them out can help them to relax before a long journey.
Regular stops for bathroom breaks, hydration and exercise are also important.
So too is making sure never to leave your dog alone, especially in a locked car.
Zach warns that even with the windows up, the car could overheat quickly.
Lastly, “packing familiar items for your dog gives them a sense of familiarity and comfort in a new environment,” the expert says.
This can include their blankets or favourite toys from home.
It comes after a vet said he never takes his pet to a dog park.
Despite parks being the most common place to let canines off the lead, animal care influencer Hunter Finn said they should be avoided.
Because dog parks are frequented by a large number of animals, it increased the risk of pets falling victim to health-related issues.
Dr Hunter Finn also issued an urgent warning to dog owners over little-known signs of serious injury and when you should take them for surgery.
Another vet also raised the alarm about five foods you should never give your pet as some could be lethal.
