EasyJet flight makes emergency landing in Manchester due to 'burning smell'

An EasyJet flight was forced to make an emergency diversion to Manchester Aiport after a "burning smell" was reported onboard.

The airliner landed in Manchester at approximately 6.45pm on Friday (May 19), with a passenger suggesting that the issue was caused by a "generator failing", reports the Manchester Evening News.

The customer tweeted: "My EasyJet flight home from Glasgow to Luton has had to make an emergency stop at Manchester due to a generator failing and smells of burning electricals! So much for this being a quick option."

Flight tracking service RadarBox tweeted that the flight from Glasgow to London Luton was "declaring an emergency and diverting to Manchester".

Footage appeared to show the plane being followed along the runway by fire crews shortly after touching down.

An EasyJet spokesperson said: "EasyJet can confirm that the fight EZY612 from Glasgow – London Luton on May 19 diverted to Manchester due to a technical issue with the aircraft. The aircraft is currently being inspected by our engineers.

"The safety of our customers and crew is easyJet's highest priority and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all manufacturers’ guidelines.

"We would like to apologise to customers for the delay and inconvenience caused."

Last month, an EasyJet flight bound for Morocco was forced to make an emergency landing in Faro, Portugal after the First Officer fell ill.

In a statement, the airline said that the Captain "performed a routine landing in accordance with standard operating procedures "and the aircraft was met by medical services on arrival in Faro".

Earlier this month, a passenger fell ill on an EasyJet flight from London to Belfast, forcing a diversion to Liverpool John Lennon Aiport.

An emergency was declared approximately one hour after taking off from London Stansted when the plane was over the Irish Sea, forcing the pilot to perform a U-turn.

Emergency services were waiting at the airport to attend to the sick passenger.
