A FORMER head of the Royal Navy warned Russia might have placed sleeper explosives on offshore wind farms — to knock out power in a conflict.

Admiral Lord West said the critical North Sea infrastructure was at risk of Russian attack.

It comes after ships disguised as trawlers have been seen mapping wind farms and undersea cables.

Lord West said: “There’s a risk as soon as you put critical infrastructure on the seabed.”

He warned Putin’s divers “may have already put down sleeper explosives”.

His comments follow repeated warnings that Russian submarine activity was at its highest level since the Cold War.

Last month, photos emerged of armed personnel in Russian military uniforms guarding the spy-ship trawlers.

Falklands veteran Lord West said offshore infrastructure was more vulnerable than sites on land.
