WITH the cost-of-living crisis putting a huge strain on many households and lots of young people finding it impossible to buy their first home, one savvy social media user had other ideas about his living situation.

One young man named Harrison, known on TikTok as TheSkipHouse, realised that he couldn’t afford to pay the expensive rent for houses in Central London, so instead decided to live in a skip instead - yes, you heard that correctly.

Harrison explained that he has decided to build himself a house inside a skip, where he will live for a year.

The artist took to Instagram to explain: “This Winter, I’ll be packing my bags and moving into a skip. That’s right, the same skips you see full of waste on the side of the road.

“With the cost of living at an all time high, and no end in sight, this project is about living for less, in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

“People across the country are changing the way they live to compensate for the rising cost of basic necessities.

“Living in a skip isn’t the solution, but rather an exploration and a statement.”

Sharing more details about the construction of his skip house on TikTok, Harrison said: “Living in Central London is way too expensive, so I decided to build myself a tiny house inside a skip where I will then live for the next year, rent free.

“There is only one week left of construction and then I will move into my new home.”

After realising that he couldn’t afford to rent in London, he added: “I had to get creative and find a loophole in the system.

“I hope it stays warm inside.

“It’s going to be an interesting year ahead.

“Move in date is fast approaching.”

Harrison has completely transformed a skip, that has been loaned to him by a skip company.

He added: “The skip company is kindly supporting the project, but I’ll still pay a nominal fee after the first couple of months.”

His skip is on private land, as he continued: “It’s an empty/pre-development plot that has been lent to me by the owner, for the project.”

While Harrison confirmed that his skip home won’t have a shower or a toilet, he stated that: “The whole thing has 50mm insulation.”

His skip videos have clearly impressed many, as his most popular one has racked up a whopping 428.4k views.

TikTok users were stunned at Harrison’s idea, which many expressed in the comments.

One person said: “Wow, never heard of something like this before. Awesome looking forward to seeing final results.”

Another added: “Can't wait to see it finished.”

A third commented: “Clever thinking…”

Whilst someone else noted: “Best TikTok project.”

Meanwhile, many other users had lots of questions about Harrisons’ new home.

One user asked: “Great project... is there going to be a problem with water getting between the skin and building” to which the savvy social media user replied “I guess I’ll soon find out, but so far so good. Bottom half is all wrapped with DPM.”

A second questioned: “Where's the loo” to which Harrison confirmed: “It’ll be a rented portaloo… not quite luxury living.”

He then went on to say: “Rented portaloo outside, and shower at work/gym. There’s definitely compromises when it comes to skip life.”

Whilst a third wondered: “Did you change the roofing?” to which Harrison stated: “I did yeah, the water was dripping over the edge of the metal roofing and then clinging to the underside where it dragged in. This works much better.”
