COUNTDOWN fans were left double-taking as today's show opened on Channel 4.

The number and words show aired its latest episode on Thursday with host Colin Murray at the helm.

He was joined by his co-presenters Rachel Riley and Susie Dent, with comedian Justin Moorhouse in the Dictionary Corner.

But some viewers noticed the start of the show was a little strange.

Colin opened the programme as he said: "Hello everybody, welcome to Countdown, it's Thursday February the 2nd, Groundhog Day."

He then said: "How are you Rachel," before she replied: "I'm very well thank you."

However, viewers were left puzzled as the same scene played out twice.

Some eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot the 45-year-old had deliberately pulled the trick to mark Groundhog Day.

It's a holiday celebrated in the US and Canada, where a crowd of on-lookers watch a groundhog, which is also known as a woodchuck, predict when spring will arrive.

It was made famous by the 1993 film starring Bill Murray, where his character Phil Connors gets stuck living the same day on repeat.

Replying to Colin's trick, one viewer said: "It's still just the warmest game show on television, and hopefully the groundhog shows up. I hope there aren't any more tricks, Colin!"

A second jokingly commented: "Everyone's hair is slightly longer in the second clip."

"I'm stumped. Although your teeth looked a wee bit different between the two," posted a third.

Last month Channel 4 finally confirmed Colin as the permanent host of Countdown following Anne Robinson's departure last year.

The star, who also presents on radio, has become a fan-favourite with viewers.
