US and Canadian search teams are in a race against time to find the vessel before those on board run out of oxygen.

BBC Breakfast hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent spoke to Mike Reiss, who took the same trip last year, and he gave a grave verdict on the vessel's chances of recovery.

He explained: "I know the logistics of it and I know really again how vast the ocean is and how very tiny this craft is and it's a beautifully designed craft, I can't disparage it, but it's meant to go down further than any other vessel can go.

"So the idea of if it being down at the bottom, I don't know how anybody's going to be able to access it, much less bring it back up you know there is a hope that it's at or near the surface.

"The phrase we keep hearing is 'they've lost communication' and I've got to say, I did three separate dives...

"I did one dive to the Titanic and two more off the coast of New York and every time they lost communication.

"And this is not to say this is a shoddy ship, but this is all new technology and they're learning this as they go along..."

However, some BBC viewers at home were not impressed by the interview or Mike's words.

One wrote on Twitter: "@BBCBreakfast absolutely appalled by the repeated ghoulish questioning around the unresponsive submersible. Uncoordinated, unprofessional and insensitive."

Another added: "This interview was totally inappropriate. Mike and his 'fun' anecdotes about his trip with no concern for the people on board whatsoever. Disgusting."

A third tweeted: "#bbcbreakfast No one is fascinated by the submarine or the visit Sally, they are interested in whether these poor people are doomed. Jesus Christ."
