Today marks the seven-year anniversary of the Brexit referendum, which saw 17,410,742 people vote to leave the European Union - but do you think the move has been a success?

The 52 percent majority meant the UK entered a period of transition, which allowed the Government to settle an agreement with the EU over the withdrawal terms.

After 47 years of membership, the UK officially ceased to be a member of the bloc on January 31, 2020, despite still being subject to some EU laws.

Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage recently admitted that Brexit has failed as the UK hasn’t “benefited economically” from the result - and the Conservatives have been unsuccessful in taking advantage of the opportunities presented from Brexit.

Speaking to BBC2’s Newsnight, the politician said: “Brexit has failed ... the Tories have let us down very, very badly.”

He added: “What Brexit has proved, I’m afraid, is that our politicians are about as useless as the commissioners in Brussels were. We have mismanaged this totally and if you look at simple things such as takeovers, such as corporation tax, we are driving business away from our country.”

The move has continued to divide Brits, as a study by thinktank Public First for the UK in a Changing Europe has revealed that only 18 percent of Leave voters felt that Brexit has gone “well” or “very well”.

A further 30 percent answered that it has “neither turned out well or badly”, while 26 percent said that it is “too soon to say”.

Some 29 percent who would continue the UK’s exile from the EU think Brexit has had a negative economic impact, compared with 67 percent of those Leavers who have switched to Remain.

Around 63 percent of Leave voters who believe it is going badly lay the blame on ministers, saying “UK politicians were ineffective and failed to get a good deal”.

Speaking about the result, director of the initiative Anand Menon said: “While very few people think Brexit is going well, a large number of Leavers also believe it is still too soon to make a definitive judgement.”

He continued: “Many Leave voters believe Brexit has not been a success because politicians have let them down. The danger is that this will lead to an erosion of faith in politics and politicians.”
