NETFLIX has responded to backlash from fans over season two of its South Korean hit show Squid Game.

Earlier this month it released exciting details about the upcoming chapter but many have been left unimpressed and flocked to criticise the streaming platform.

After dropping a trailer for its 'real-life' version of the show, Squid Game: The Challenge, Netflix confirmed who would be appearing in season two of the fictional series.

They revealed Lee Jung-jae will return as protagonist Gi-hun, who fans will remember survived the first games and left the series on a cliffhanger.

Lee Byung-hun, as the mastermind, and detective Hwang Jun-ho, played by Wi Ha-jun, will also be back.

However, O Yeong-su – player 001 – will not return as he has been indicted on charges of sexual misconduct in South Korea.

Amongst the new cast members, there are Im Siwan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun.

An exciting cast announcement of course but fans of the show were left shocked at the seeming lack of women and flocked to blast Netflix.

One person wrote in response: "the lack of female leads on squid game s2 is sickening."

"new squid game season not having a female lead is crazy considering hoyeon was one of the reasons the show became so popular" added someone else.

While a third person blasted: "squid game season 2’s new characters are just men like where are the women???? the female actress was the best thing of season 1."

Following the outrage, the streaming giant has now responded.

In a statement provided to Insider, a spokesperson for Netflix said: "This was the first cast announcement for Squid Game season two.

"We’re excited to share more casting news soon, which will include the leading female characters."
