A COUPLE has slammed the "shamefully" extortionate prices at a fish and chips shop.

Mike and Jane Turner were in the seaside town of Salcombe, Devon, when they stopped for lunch - but the cost of their meal put a sour taste in their mouth.

The couple claimed they spent £15 for a portion of fish and chips to share, along with two cans of soda, but the measly portion sizes shocked them.

Mike took to Facebook and said: "We'd been walking six miles and were super hot, hungry and exhausted.

"We were going to grab a sandwich but it was £8 each and to me that's [not acceptable] and I refused to pay it so we said we'd share fish and chips."

But when the portion of fish and chips arrived at their table, the couple were infuriated that the fish was "the size of a tomato sauce sachet".

Mike said: "We've always been really supportive of locals, we use local Air BnBs, local taxis and local pubs so that's what hurt the most.

"They get a lot of business in the winter from people who walk the South West Coast Path.

"It overshadowed it, we won't go to Salcombe again. It tarnished it. They charge whatever they like hoping that the majority of people will pay it."

Users online were shocked by the tiny portion, and one said: "This is a rip off and typical of cafes cashing in on passing trade.

"This gives cafes and takeaways a bad name, not walkers."

Some weren't impressed that Mike had criticised a "local" business, and pointed out that the cost of living crisis is affecting them as well.

Another TikToker shared that she was charged a whopping £55 for fish and chips at a "posh chippy".

Her video review of the meal has been liked by more than 1,200 people - with many sharing her surprise at the cost, though others have stuck up for the award-winning restaurant.

The reviewer's partner did give a thumbs-up at the end of the video - though both seemed shocked by the price.

The pair were charged £39.90 for two large portions of haddock and chips, £2.95 for curry sauce, £1 for a pickled onion, £5.70 for their Cokes and a service add-on of £6.19 - tallying £55.74 in total.

The TikToker told viewers: "We decided to visit London's best chippie.

"It's definitely the most expensive fish shop I've ever come across.

"These guys have won multiple awards for their fish and chips, so we decided to see if it was worth the hype.

"Inside it was really, really busy - quite an old-fashioned but kitsch kinda-type setting but the staff were really, really lovely."

She described the fish as "perfectly-cooked" and the chips as "great" - but said she was "howling" at the pickle's "presentation" in its own dish.

And she concluded her mixed review by saying: "All in all the food was good and we cleared our plates, but the price - I mean..."

Hashtags she added to her clip included the phrases "mostexpensive" and "overpriced?"

In the comments below she agreed with someone who called it a "rip-off".
