WE’VE all heard of some weird and wonderful cleaning hacks that other people seem to swear by.

But some aren’t all they cracked up to be – and experts have even issued warnings against using them altogether.

That’s certainly the case for a cleaning hack that one mum tried to spread the word about.

The woman revealed she’d been looking for a way to make her home spotless but also wanted it to smell fresh and clean all day long.

So she tried putting a dryer sheet in her vacuum as she was hoovering to see if it did what she desired.

The result? She claimed it left her carpets dust-free on top of smelling “lovely”.

After discovering the trick, she took to social media to tell other cleaning fans.

She posted on the Facebook group called Mums Who Clean, taking the time to explain how she put a fluffy dryer sheet inside the barrel of her Dyson vacuum every time she wanted to tackle her carpets.

While many asked her more questions and showed interest in trying it out for themselves, not everyone was impressed.

And it didn’t take long for an expert to wade into the debate.

They warned that it could be hugely damaging for the machinery in the long-run and declared it not worth the risk.

Dyson's Lead Separation Systems Engineer Jonathan McGaughey told Yahoo Lifestyle: "While we love the idea of finding ways to reduce bad odours in your home, we would never recommend intentionally including large foreign objects in the bin of a Dyson vacuum.

“It could reduce the functionality of the primary cyclone and cause a loss of suction power.

“We do not recommend that owners expose their machines to any liquid including water, or essential oils.”

Jonathan then continued to state that as well as causing damage to the hoover, it could also void their warranty.

He went on to say: “Owners should refer to the instructions in the manual provided with the machine upon purchase.

“Usage of their machine outside of what it’s designed to do may void their guarantee."

However, this is far from the only cleaning “hack” that experts have discouraged others from following.

Other tips and tricks that have been torn apart include spraying radiators with Fabulosa and mixing Zoflora with boiling water.
