Newlywed dies weeks after carbon monoxide leak killed husband in Spanish villa

A newlywed woman died from carbon monoxide poisoning a matter of weeks after her husband was killed in the same manner while the pair were on their honeymoon.

Mary Somerville, 39, was found unconscious next to her husband Jaime Carsi, 40, inside a Spanish villa on May 6.

Jamie was dead at the scene but the yoga teacher was taken to hospital and remained there fighting for her life.

She sadly died on July 2 at St Columba’s Hospice in Edinburgh, where the couple were from.

It is believed a broken fridge in their holiday accommodation caused the deadly gas leak.

The couple were married at a wedding ceremony with friends and family only 15 days before the tragic incident.

Mary's funeral will be held at Inverness Crematorium with the date and time yet to be confirmed, reports the DailyRecord.

A friend, Sujata Sriram, said: "Mary Somerville, you are dearly missed.

"Your radiance and sparkle, the soulful pitch of your voice, your joyful laughter.

"The fun times we had are now in the currency of precious memories.

"A treasure - your selfless service to humanity with enthusiasm, unbounded energy and love...along with your life partner Jaime Carsi who is also no longer in our midst!

"Even as I pray for you both, I remain in disbelief. I was so fortunate to have met you on my Art of Living journey."

While Iain Stewart, Executive Director of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association added: "It pains me to share this deeply heart breaking news.

"My good friend and friend of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association Mary Somerville sadly passed away.

"Many people will know Mary through her role as a teacher in the Art of Living.

"I will remember Mary for her warm and infectious personality and smile that would light up any room.

"Please join me in sending prayers to Mary’s family and loved ones.

"At this time as people of faith we are comforted by the belief that Mary will once again be united with her beloved Jaime."

Patricia Green said: "I'm so upset. Mary was a lovely girl. [I have] happy memories of our Dochgarroch days.

"Sincere sympathy to you all. Rest in peace Mary."

Reynard Mia added: "Oh my goodness, I remember Mary from high school, such a lovely talented girl. Thoughts with all the family."

It was reported that friends of the pair alerted police after they failed to turn up for a boating trip.

Emergency services rushed to the rural property in Cala Mesquida and discovered Jaime dead with Mary barely breathing.

An autopsy carried confirmed the husband, an investment management analyst, died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Guardia Civil, Spain's police force, later said that the leak was caused by “the breakdown of a refrigerator”.
