As a free agent, he was linked with fellow French sides Nantes and Nice, as well as a move to Saudi Arabia.

But he has ended up penning a pre-contract agreement with South American outfit Vasco da Gama.

And many punters are confused as to why he has chosen the Brazilian side.

A third added: "Wow ????. Vasco De Gama".

And a fourth responded: "Never would have put him to that club, it’s a weird one."

Payet arrived at West Ham from Marseille in 2015.

And it was his first campaign in particular - the 2015/16 season - where he enthralled the Hammers faithful.

He racked up 12 goals and 15 assists in 38 appearances - including one of the all-time great free-kicks against Crystal Palace.

But a poor start to the following season ultimately saw him return to Marseille in January 2017.

And he played another 243 games for the club, netting 63 goals.
