THE legendary TV presenter Michael Parkinson has sadly passed away, after an incredible 50-year career.

The national treasure, who died aged 88, leaves behind his beloved wife Mary, and their family.

Who is Mary Parkinson?

Michael Parkinson's wife Mary was born on July 16, 1936, in Doncaster.

Like her late husband, she is known for being a journalist and television presenter.

Mary presented the 1970s magazine programme Good Afternoon, produced by Thames Television.

Amongst other TV work, she also frequently appeared as a panelist on Through the Keyhole.

Meanwhile, her late husband Sir Michael, fondly known as Parky, was born in Cudworth, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire, in 1935.

His big break on Fleet Street came after he was handed a weekly sports column in The Sunday Times in 1965.

Sir Michael moved from newspapers to television in the late 1960s when he was offered a role on Granada as a local reporter.

This is where is career really took off, and he soon became the biggest presenter on national TV with his own self-titled show.

Over the years Sir Michael interviewed giants from the world of music, film and sport.

Notable guests included Muhammad Ali, David Beckham, David Bowie, Clint Eastwood, Tom Cruise, George Best and David Attenborough.

During his extensive career, Sir Michael has received a number of awards for his work.

These include a BAFTA, National Television Award and a knighthood in 2008.

When did Michael Parkinson marry Mary?

Michael and Marry were married for over 60 years, after they we in 1959, after meeting on an open topped bus.

Sadly, Sir Michael died on August 16, 2023.

A statement from his family said: "After a brief illness Sir Michael Parkinson passed away peacefully at home last night in the company of his family.

"The family request that they are given privacy and time to grieve."

Did they have any children?

During the relationship, Michael and Mary welcomed three sons.

Michael Parkinson Jr, Nicholas Parkinson, Andrew Parkinson.

Their eldest son, Michael Jr, is married to comic and actress Fiona Allen.
