Who are Michael Parkinson's children?

Michael Parkinson married Mary Ann Heneghan in August, 1959.

The couple raised three sons - here's what we know about them.

Michael Parkinson Jr

Michael Jr is the chat show host's youngest son.

He pursued television like his father, but works as a director.

In 2021, he spoke to the Express about his father saying: "He’s a human as well, therefore he has rough edges like we all have."

Michael Jr is married to comic and actress Fiona Allen.

In 2010, Michael Sr told The Times that Jr was the "court jester" who could make everybody laugh.

Nicholas Parkinson

The middle of the bunch is Nicholas, who works as a chef.

He went to the Savoy, and then to Paris, before serving an apprenticeship at Claridge’s.

Nick worked as a chef for seven years before moving into front of house.

After living in Australia for 13 years, Nick took on the Royal Oak pub in Paley Street, Berkshire, in 2001,

The pub went on to earn a Michelin star in 2010, but Nick put it up for sale in 2019 after being offered another opportunity.

Nick said the new opportunity would make it "near impossible" for him and his wife to stay at the Oak.

Dad Michael told The Times in 2010 that his middle child was the rebellious one in the family.

He said: "Nick was the traditional middle child. He was the guy who was out of step with everything and everybody."

But after opening the pub with his son, Michael admitted he loved Nick's "self-sufficiency" and that he "worked bloody hard".

He added: "He can be an awkward little s*d, because he’s determined to do things his way, but I admire that too."

Andrew Parkinson

Michael and Mary's eldest son Andrew has kept out of the spotlight during his life.

The TV legend told The Times that Andrew was "the boss man, or thinks he is".

Andrew lives close by to his parents and brothers in Berkshire.

What have Michael Parkinson's children said?

Michael Jr told the Express in 2021: "The funniest thing about fame is when you get approached by people, and they say, ‘Aren’t you lucky to have a father like him? What a lovely man he is!’

"And I kind of think, ‘Yes, he is a lovely man, but all you’re seeing is what he portrays on the screen.’

"You kind of have to bite your tongue a bit and go, ‘Well he ain't always like that'."

Middle son Nick said he didn't know what his dad did for a living when he was young, but learned that he was famous when people started pointing him out.

Nick also revealed that his dad was strict.

He said: "He believed in good behaviour at home, and good behaviour when you went to visit other people.

"That was of the utmost importance to him.

"Also he was always going on about the value of money.

"He came from a northern background, the son of a miner who had to work really hard for everything the family had. You had to work to earn — it wasn’t just there for you — and he’d talk about appreciating what you had: 'appreciation, not expectation'."

Who was Michael Parkinson's wife?

Michael married his wife Mary, from Doncaster, in 1959.

She was born on July 16, 1936, in Doncaster.

The pair met in Yorkshire on top of a bus and quickly fell for each other.

Like her late husband, she is known for being a journalist and television presenter.

Mary presented the 1970s magazine programme Good Afternoon, produced by Thames Television.

Amongst other TV work, she also frequently appeared as a panellist on Through The Keyhole.

Michael revealed that he went through a "deeply unhappy" time during his marriage as he turned to alcohol while working on Fleet Street.

But after Mary told him he had become “ugly” when he drank, he quit.

The couple were married for 64 years.
