A MAN was quoted thousands to redo his decking - so he did it himself and saved £1,600 by buying scraps from Facebook Marketplace.

Michael Hanna, 33, said he was quoted "over £2,600" for decking in his back garden.

He decided to give his garden a jaw-dropping makeover by building his decking all by himself.

And the savvy homeowner revealed he only spent £938 on supplies.

In order to save money Michael bought second hand power tools from Facebook Marketplace.

Now, visitors are stunned by his bright and welcoming decking that comes complete with seating.

Michael, a doctor from Worcester, told LatestDeals: "The patio at the back of our garden was looking pretty lifeless.

"It was functional as a pergola with a roof and we could sit outside, but my wife and I wanted to make it look more polished.

"We like the natural wood look so we decided to create decking that could have seating on it.

The couple also added more lights and replaced some of the brickwork at the back with fencing.

Before they decided to go DIY a professional quoted them £2600 for the decking - excluding the fence.

But when Michael bought all the supplies himself from Amazon and local timber yards, they only cost him £938 - a saving of more than £1600.

He cut the timber to size and fitted it after following instructions from YouTube guides.

Plucky amateur Michael ended up drilling the brick wall twice before finding the right drill for the job.

He protected the decking with deck tape and two coats of preservative oil.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals, said: "Michael has saved an impressive sum of money by going DIY with this project.

"I’m sure he and his wife will enjoy using this decking for many years to come."
