But he's set to play the mischievous and boozy university professor Alan Cornwall in the sitcom's sequel.

Kelsey Grammer., 68, has raved about Nicholas' acting and comedic abilities after joining the much-loved show, which initially ran from 1993 to 2004.

"Nicholas Lyndhurst is co-lead in it. Nick and I fell in love when we were doing Man of La Mancha together," he told The Sunday Times.

" I warned them in America. I said: “Wait until this guy gets here. You’ll be doing a scene with him and suddenly you realise he’s just run off with it.

"He’s an extraordinary actor, a dear friend. And I am so pleased."

He added: “I accuse him of being a bit of a sandbagger because you don’t see him coming and all of a sudden he’s getting all the laughs.

"Nicholas has been hired to play a university professor called Alan in the reboot, who is pals with Frasier."

The Frasier reboot has been long anticipated by fans of the original hit series, itself a spin-off from the original sitcom Cheers!. A hilarious official spoof trailer for the new series shows Frasier as a menacing villain but the show will follow the sitcom format of previous series.

This is Nicholas' first role since son Archie died aged 19 in September 2020 of a brain haemorrhage.

The CBBC actor was discovered at his family home in Fulham, West London.
