TENNIS star Stan Wawrinka has sensationally claimed that the Davis Cup is full of "paid actors" who are told to cheer on various nations.

The world number 40 took to Twitter to say: "Trivia Davis Cup question : Did you know that @ITFTennis are paying people to support and make some noise for every country at every match."

The star made the claim after people criticised the poor atmosphere at the tournament in Manchester.

Wawrinka represented Switzerland in the tournament, with the team crashing out during the group stage.

Switzerland were drawn in Group B alongside Australia, France and Great Britain.

The Swiss team were eliminated following a 3-0 clean sweep loss to Australia on Sunday.

Wawrinka has been vocal in his criticism of the tournament this year, taking to social media earlier in the tournament to highlight the hundreds of empty seats for Switzerland's earlier match against France.

But he took things one step further yesterday as he accused the International Tennis Federation of artificially creating an atmosphere.

Former Venezuelan player and coach Daniel Vallverdu was among those left questioning the outrageous claim.

He tweeted in reply: “I hope that’s not true?” But Wawrinka doubled down, saying: “100% confirmed.”

Former American tennis ace Noah Rubin was also among those in disbelief at the claim, as he tweeted: "Wait, is this actually true or are you trolling?"

Wawrinka doubled down on his claim to Rubin, saying: "True" with two facepalm emojis.

Wawrinka was not involved in Switzerland’s crucial tie against Australia.

Thanasi Kokkinakis and Alex de Minaur beat Dominic Stricker and Marc-Andrea Huesler in the singles, while Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell beat Stricker and Huesler 6-2 6-4 in the doubles.

The ITF have told SunSport they do not pay for fans to turn up for Davis Cup ties, saying "spectators purchase tickets", but they have in the past helped out countries out with bands when they have not brought their own one.
