The freezer is a humble appliance, but an absolute life-saver for most of us. If you've had a hard day at work and don't want to cook from scratch, or your kids are begging for a chicken nuggets and chips meal at the end of the day, you'll reach in, take things out and pop them in the oven.

But did you know that you're probably using your freezer wrong, and there are steps you should be taking to ensure you're not needlessly wasting money?

A "zero waste expert" @gittemary has revealed all on her TikTik page, captioning one of her latest videos: "How to lower your energy bill and help the planet at the same time."

In the video, the pro said: "Did you know that the ice in your freezer has a pretty big impact? Just two millimetres of ice increases the energy use up to 20%, and I definitely had more than two millimetres of ice built up in there. To fix that, I boiled a pot of water and stuck it in the freezer for 10 minutes before I started scraping away. This was so satisfying - just look at this ice removal."

She then held the block of ice and joked: "That's the money, literally." Holding the ice she said: "Imagine how much money and resources this represents. The extra power that is required to keep this ice cold. I definitely won't let it get this bad ever again. Keeping your freezer tidy is both way cheaper and way more sustainable."

In the comments of the video, someone wrote: "Why didn't I think of putting boiling water there instead of turning off the whole fridge until it melts off?" "There is more ice than food in mine", another joked. A TikToker suggested another way to use the melted ice, commenting: "You can use the ice collected to slowly water your plants, every water save is a win!"
