Manchester United will be hoping to secure their first European win of the season as they face the visit of Galatasaray in the second matchday of this season’s Champions League group stage.
Having lost at home to Crystal Palace at the weekend, United’s poor start to the season continued and they will face a Galatasaray side packed full of recognisable names. Among those names is former United winger Wilfried Zaha, who made the move to Turkey in the summer to join the likes of Mauro Icardi, Hakim Ziyech and Tanguy Ndombele in Istanbul.
Both sides were unable to win their opening group stage fixtures, with United’s loss to Bayern Munich leaving them bottom of the group after Galatasaray drew 2-2 against FC Copenhagen. Having lost four of their past six matches in all competitions, United are in desperate need of a positive result but will be presented with a tough challenge against a side who are undefeated in 14 matches this season in all competitions.
It’s 11 years since the sides met in a competitive fixture, with a win apiece coming when the two sides last met during the 2012/13 Champions League group stages.
Their trip to Istanbul on November 29 will be highly anticipated, greeting United received during a memorable visit to Istanbul 30 years ago.

United have been hit with the blow of the news that Lisandro Martinez requires surgery, leaving the Red Devils with a defensive injury crisis amid the continued absences of Aaron Wan Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Jadon Sancho’s absence also continues, with Sergio Reguilon a doubt for the match.
Galatasaray, meanwhile, will have to contend with the absence of Hakim Ziyech, with the former Chelsea man a doubt for this week’s match.
