The thriller explores money laundering and criminal gangs, starring The Bay actress Morven Christie and Lord of the Rings' Peter Mullan.

Morven, 42, plays the role of an account and mum who becomes entangled in a police operation to tackle a crime lord.

She learns how her husband Jared has been laundering a dangerous criminal's money.

Peter, 63, portrays the notorious criminal who won't stop at nothing to get his money.

But while all the action from the nail-biting show is meant to be happening in Edinburgh, it was actually filmed in Glasgow.

Viewers at home quickly realised the major blunder and slammed ITV for trying to pull the wool over their eyes.

Writing on social media, one telly watcher said: "Beautiful Glasgow playing Edinburgh. Not quite sure why!"

A second wrote: "So far, I’m unable to fully enjoy this #Payback tv show because it’s supposed to be set in Edinburgh but exterior shots are Glasgow."

"Could they not just film it in Edinburgh? What's the deal here," said a third.

Despite the rocky start thought, fans have been left gripped by the drama.

One tweeted: "#Payback has a strong opening!"

While a second commented: "Really enjoying this so far!"
