A Downton Abbey star looks completely unrecognisable in a first look at Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight's new BBC drama.

Michelle Dockery looks worlds apart from her elegant character, Lady Mary Crawley, in the first released pictures of an upcoming series.

The actress, who is known for starring in ITV's Downton Abbey and recently marrying Phoebe Waller Bridge's brother Jasper, has been cast in BBC's time period drama, This Town.

In the first-look pictures of This Town, Michelle, 41, looked unidentifiable as she channelled a punk rock look, wearing a retro T-shirt while applying a fuschia lipstick in a compact mirror, which clashed with her bold pink eyeshadow.

Instead of rocking her iconic sleek brown bob, her new character sported long, wavy, chic hair with a heavy fringe, while her arms were adorned with various trinkets and bracelets.

She looked worlds away from the graceful Lady Mary's prim and proper attire and her usual elegant outfit choices.

According to the synopsis, This Town tells the story of a band's formation against a backdrop of violence, capturing how creative genius can emerge from a time of madness.

The 1981 drama is 'set in a world of family ties, teenage kicks and the exhilarating music of a generation.

The BBC wrote: "This Town tells the story of a band's formation set against a backdrop of violence mixing in a story of an extended family drawn into the world of ska and two tone."

Marcella's Nicholas Pinnock, Woman King's Jordan Bolger, The Last Kingdom actor David Dawson, and Back To Life star Geraldine James will also star in the upcoming series.

Michelle is no rookie to drastically change her looks to play a character.

She has previously donned a red wig to play a con artist for a US TV show titled Good Behaviour and transformed into a barrister for Anatomy of a Scandal.

Most recently, she was cast in another exciting role in an upcoming movie adaptation of Richard McGuire's graphic novel of the same name, Here, featuring Tom Hanks.

A trailer for This Town is yet to be released.
