A RESTAURANT has been given a roasting for flogging a £20-a-head Yorkshire pudding fondue.

The eatery serves up giant Yorkies and they are dipped into a vat of steaming gravy – rather the usual melted cheese.

The trendy Manchester venue has launched the menu item to celebrate Yorkshire Pudding Day.

Would-be diners at The Mews in the city centre are told: “It's National Yorkshire Pudding Day this Friday and what better way to celebrate than with the most radical paradigm shift in the Yorkshire pudding world since the Yorkshire pudding wrap. The Mews on Deansgate Mews is about to unveil the gravy fondue.

“You get a pile of crisp, homemade Yorkshires and a steaming cauldron of hot gravy to dip them in, fondue style.

“They're served up with a wealth of Sunday dinner trimmings too, including roasties, vegetables and slices of warm pastrami. So load up a Yorkshire with the trimmings of your choice and get to dipping.

“The gravy is made up of chicken and veal stock, and then enriched with red wine, so this is the proper stuff. It happens this weekend only - from Friday to Sunday - and it costs £20 per person. It's pre-bookings only.”

But one person hit out on social media: “Don’t mess with tradition.”

And another added: “Manchester folk messing with the Yorkshire pudding. Sacrilege.”

One critic told The Sun: "It's amazing what people come up with to try and stand out in a crowded field, and this fondue is far-out.

"But the bottom line is, as a self-styled roast aficionado, I don't share my gravy with anyone."

The Mews chose not to comment about their contentious fondue pudds when contacted by The Sun.

Last week we told how burgers are batter than ever — with Yorkshire puddings instead of a bun. Customers can fill it with beef, chicken or even bacon and eggs at Wapentake bar in Leeds.

But the menu warns: “Not for the faint-hearted.”

The £12.50 burgers come with wedges and a jug of gravy. And a breakfast pudding is £7.

Earlier this year The Sun told how shoppers were going off their trolleys for Yorkshire puddings — crammed with beefy lasagne.

Thousands snapped up the £4 meal which marries the best of British with the Italian pasta favourite in a collaboration between Iceland and producer Twisted.
