Conservative Party chairman Nadhim Zahawi is facing mounting anger over his tax affairs after he was accused of paying a multi-million pound penalty to resolve a dispute with HMRC.
It has emerged he made the settlement - estimated to be around £5million - when presiding over the UK's tax policy as Chancellor last summer.
Mr Zahawi initially described his tax affairs as 'smears', but released a statement on Saturday to 'address some of the confusion about my finances'.
He said he resolved the 'careless and not deliberate' error between his appointment as Chancellor in July and party chair in October.
