Matthew Perry admitted he “didn't remember” proposing to former fiancée Molly Hurwitz.

The former Friends star, 54, was found dead at his home in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, on Saturday, and fans of the hit US sitcom have been left devastated. Former co-stars, including Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt Le Blanc and Lisa Kudrow have all paid tribute to the beloved actor, who had struggled with drink and drug addiction in the past.

His 32-year-old ex-fiancée Molly, who works as a literary manager for Thruline Entertainment, also paid tribute to the talented star, and in a moving social media post, she said she had “loved him deeper than I could comprehend”. The couple began dating in 2018, and were engaged in November 2020. However, just a few months later they had parted ways.

At the time, Matthew told People magazine in a brief statement that the relationship had ended amicably. “Sometimes things just don't work out and this is one of them. I wish Molly the best.” But in his memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, which was released last year, he described the jaw-dropping chain of events that led to their romance coming to an end.

In his book, Matthew did not name Molly, but wrote about a situation in which he proposed to a girlfriend while “high as a kite” during a stint in rehab in Switzerland. He recalled buying a ring because he was “desperate that she would leave me”, and he “didn't want to be this injured and alone” during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I was high on 1,800 milligrams of hydrocodone when I asked her to marry me. I had even asked for her family's blessing. Then I'd proposed, high as a kite. And on one knee,” he wrote. Matthew confessed he learned about the engagement when he returned home to Los Angeles to find his girlfriend had moved in.

“I was slowly beginning to realise that I was engaged, lived with a woman and two dogs. Needless to say, I was not ready for any of this. ‘You live with me? We live together?'” he explained. He revealed Molly then had to awkwardly tell him about the plans they had made for their future, and was left heartbroken when he admitted he couldn’t remember.

“‘We have kids' names picked out, the whole nine yards, which is the name of a movie I once made? You went down on one knee to propose, which really hurt your stomach, remember?'” he recalled her telling him. “Needless to say, we broke up,” Matthew concluded.

Molly took to Instagram to share a poignant memorial for her former fiancé, and said she was left devastated following his tragic death. “While I loved him deeper than I could comprehend, he was complicated, and he caused pain like I’d never known. No one in my adult life has had a more profound impact on me than Matthew Langford Perry. I have tremendous gratitude for that, for everything I learned from our relationship,” she wrote.
