Douglas is a California attorney and was a partner at the firm DLA Piper, where he worked based out of Los Angeles and Washington, DC.
However, he took a leave of absence to support his wife on the 2020 presidential campaign, before leaving his role at DLA Piper permanently to avoid any conflict of interests.

Douglas and Kamala married in a Santa Barbara courthouse on August 22, 2014.
The pair met on a blind date in 2013 which was set up by Kamala's friend, Chrisette Hudlin.
In her 2019 memoir, The Truths We Hold, Harris revealed that the day after they had their first date, Emhoff sent a list of future dates.
Kamala wrote: "The morning after our first date, Doug emailed me with a list of his available dates for the next couple of months.
"'I'm too old to play games or hide the ball,' the email read. 'I really like you, and I want to see if we can make this work.'"

Less than a year of dating, Douglas asked Kamala to marry her.
Now the two live together happily married in their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles.

Douglas and Kamala have no children together, although he has two children, Cole and Ella, from a previous marriage.
Douglas' son Cole is a graduate of Colorado College, while his younger daughter, Ella, studied at Parsons School of Design from 2017 to 2021.
In October 2023, Cole married his longtime girlfriend, Greenley Littlejohn, in an exclusive wedding ceremony in Los Angeles.
