LORRAINE Kelly has taken a swipe at long-time rival Esther McVey saying her new government role "probably won't work."

The Scot, 63, gleefully giggled as she chatted about the former GB News host, 56, who this week was appointed as the Conservative Government's minister for Common Sense.

Esther is a minister without portfolio following Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's cabinet re-shuffle - which saw ex Home Secretary Suella Braverman ditched from her front-bench role.

The Tatton MP has been dubbed the "anti woke tsar" tasked with tackling the scourge of wokery.

Yet Lorraine couldn't resist a dig and quipped how the newly-created role 'probably wouldn't work'.

It came during the handover from Good Morning Britain, where anchor Susanna Reid said: "If Esther McVey is not going to say it's time for a general election she should definitely say it's time for Christmas decorations."

Lorraine sarcastically replied: "And I always listens to everything she [Esther] says."

Lorraine continued to laugh as Susanna agreed: "You do - and you have usually got something to say in response Lorraine!"

Lorraine admitted: "We will get taken off the air Susanna!

"We will get taken off the air, and never work again.

"So you know ..." before mimicking a 'cut' movement with her hands.

GMB anchor Ed Balls swiftly stepped in and said: "Time to move on - time for our competiton."

Though Lorraine's comments may have seemed to some viewers to be off-the-cuff, there's actually history between the pair.

The Scot told how she was "baffled" over speculation of a spat with the successful politician back in 2019.

Previously, Esther who worked on GMTV in the '90s before moving into politics - suggested the presenter was left unhappy when she was promoted above her.

As she launched her bid to be the next Tory leader back in 2019, the politician said of Lorraine: "We used to share a dressing room, she used to be on the programme afterwards and obviously she used to be partnered with Eamonn Holmes.

"Then I was promoted to be partnered with Eamonn Holmes.

"But she was great, it was a great show and I can't believe it was nearly 20 years ago I did that show, but never mind - it was really good at the time, really good fun."

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Lorraine shook her head in disagreement as she watched Esther's comments, remarking that the situation was "nuts".

Joking with hosts at the time Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, Lorraine replied: "Well who wouldn't want to fight over Eamonn?"

She continued: "To be honest I am baffled by that, I have had my own show since 1992 and I don't think she joined until five years later."

She also hit back at Esther's claims that they shared a dressing room.

She continued: "As far as sharing dressing rooms go, it was just a little room that everyone shared.

"We went in and got ready, it wasn't a dressing room with couches - just a little room, very basic.

"I'll be genuinely honest, I don't remember much - it was such a long time ago, my show was totally separate so there was no interaction."

Yet today's comments seem to have again stirred the pot and reignited the subject.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, a Whitehall insider told The Sun Esther will be "leading the charge on the government's anti-woke agenda, streamlining as a minister attending the Cabinet."

It comes as David Cameron today made a sensational comeback to frontline politics as Foreign Secretary.
