“I’m in the last third of my life and I thought, ‘I can’t do primetime drama 24/7 at that pace’,” he told Radio Times.

The actor mentioned that filming the show involves long days, but he's looking forward to 'reconnecting with the outdoors'.

Rob said: “I’ve just finished four months on Grantchester, and it's long days. I love what I do, but I’m looking forward to reconnecting with the outdoors."

When asked when he might leave the show, he insisted: “I’ll leave when [Grantchester writer] Daisy Coulam leaves.

“Daisy is the visionary of that show. And the team they’ve assembled provides me with a safety net."

The news comes after Rob's co-star, Tom, 33, revealed series eight would be his final outing as the vicar.

Meanwhile, bosses have dropped the first spoilers for the new season of Grantchester.
