The walkout took place between 5pm and 10pm Friday evening.

In Brighton, riders congregated outside McDonald's stores in Western Road and London Road as part of the strike.

A police presence was visible and riders beeped their horns and rode in unison across the city on the south coast of England.

A Deliveroo spokeswoman said: “We offer riders the self employed, flexible work they tell us they value, alongside protections. Riders always earn at least the national minimum wage, plus vehicle costs, for the time they are working with us, though the vast majority earn far more than this.

"Riders are also automatically insured for free, covering them if they are in an accident or injured while working and receive income protection if they are unwell and cannot work.”

A note on Deliveroo's website read: "We'll be back to normal soon. We are currently experiencing some disruption to our delivery network. We're working hard to resolve this but your order may take longer to arrive."

Downdetector received a peak of 540 reports of issues at around 8pm Friday evening.

An Uber Eats spokeswoman said: "We offer a flexible way for couriers to earn by using the app when and where they choose.

"We know that the vast majority of couriers are satisfied with their experience on the app, and we regularly engage with couriers to look at how we can improve their experience."

A Just Eat spokesperson said: “We take any concerns raised by couriers on our network seriously.

"We provide a highly competitive base rate to self-employed couriers and also offer regular incentives to help them maximise their earnings.

"We continue to review our pay structure regularly and welcome any feedback from couriers."

More than 3,000 drivers are expected to stop delivering nationally during the strike.

In reaction to the strike, one person on X, formerly Twitter, wrote: "Awww I didn’t know Deliveroo drivers were on strike today and I ordered a burger and he was like you’re lucky because I just took a last minute ride! Solidarity to the drivers!!"

Another said: "Makes you wonder why they were still taking orders, if they knew there was a strike on?"

Not everyone was supportive though, with one posting: "Because of the strike action. It's not hard to say guys. Sack THEM. plenty of others who could do with a job ATM."
