CALL the Midwife fans were left in floods of tears after a heart wrenching episode aired showing the Turner family facing tragedy.

In scenes that were teased before the thirteenth season of the show came out, the residents of Poplar left the bustle of East London behind and headed to the coast.

The trip was organised by Mayor Violet Bucket, who thought it would be nice for everyone to get some respite from everyday life by the beach.

Sadly, things took a turn for the worse when May Tang got carried away by the tide.

Patrick and Shelagh Turner's adopted daughter nearly drowned as strong waves swept her underwater.

Thankfully nurse Lucille Robinson spotted her while smoking by the shore and swam out to save her.

The traumatised little girl was left gasping for breath as her adopted parents fought to resuscitate her back on the beach, sobbing in relief when May threw up the sea water she had swallowed.

However, this was not the end of their troubles, as the child suffered from the after effects of her near death experience and had to be hospitalised back at home.

This called attention to the fact that May's adoption hadn't yet been finalised.

A social worker met with Shelagh to discuss her wellbeing, and shared that the girl's biological mum was unhappy to hear her life had been risked at sea.

May's birth mum was left considering taking her daughter back after the incident, leaving Shelagh bereft.

Viewers at home broke down in tears at the news and were left emotional by the little girl's brush with tragedy.

One Call the Midwife fan shared: "This episode is a heavy one my goodness. I think I’ve cried over 3 different people in 45 minutes."

Another chimed in: "I never get through it without crying #CallTheMidwife."

A third empathised with the mum, saying: "Shelagh has been crying basically this entire episode I am not okay."

Others backed Patrick and Shelagh as their preferred parents for May, saying: "Just when you think The Turners have gone through enough tonight… adoption agency has to see Shelagh & Patrick are the best fit for May!"

Someone else agreed: "May can't have better parents then Patrick and Shelagh."
