Liverpool should sign Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich this January, former Red Danny Murphy has suggested.

The January transfer window has been open for a week although Jurgen Klopp has yet to welcome any significant additions. The only business completed by Liverpool has seen young midfielder Fabio Carvalho recalled from his loan spell at German side RB Leipzig.

With the Reds embroiled in a fight to lift the Premier League, there have been several suggestions for potential deals. Former Reds midfielder Murphy believes that German superstar Kimmich would be an ideal addition.

Speaking on the BBC ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup showdown with Arsenal, he said: “I think they are ahead of schedule. They transformed the whole midfield in the summer with four new signings and they have all had an impact at times this season.

“Three of the four came from clubs where they haven't been under pressure and they have adapted well. I think they will sign a centre half because they have lost Joel Matip for the season.

“They are heavily reliant on Virgil van Dijk and Quansah is a decent young talent but he is inexperienced. In an ideal world, I would like a midfielder like Joshua Kimmich, someone who can dictate play and games, who is real top quality.”

Kimmich, 28, has been a pivotal player for Bayern and Germany over several years. After signing from Stuttgart, he has gone on to make 367 appearances for the Bundesliga powerhouses.

In that time, he has lifted eight league titles, the Champions League, three German Cups and a whole host of other trophies. His future at the Allianz Arena has been called into question recently with just 18 months left on his current contract.

Liverpool’s fierce rivals Man United were recently linked, while Kimmich was reportedly among Man City’s targets in the summer before they completed a deal for Matheus Nunes. Kimmich was asked about his commitment to Bayern and claimed he was not interested in moving on.

Speaking at the time, the midfielder said: “It was difficult not to come across it [the rumours]. Generally, I’m not too invested in the rumours. I still have, as everyone knows, two years left on my contract and we have big plans [for those two years] at Bayern."

Kimmich missed four out of the previous six of Bayern’s Bundesliga matches before the winter break through a combination of suspension and illness.
