A widow has been left heartbroken after burglars poured bleach on her clothes during a burglary on her late husband's birthday.

Rebecca Martin said her 80-year-old nan, Betty, came home to find her bungalow had been ransacked. When she returned home, the pensioner opened the door and instantly knew her home had been broken into. Rebecca said that not only did the crooks steal money, but they also trashed the place.

She said the thieves also poured bleach over her grandmother’s sofa, clothes, and curtains. Piles of clothes and belongings were scattered around Betty’s home in the Shard End area of Birmingham. Rebecca says every door was broken and the heartless criminals even smashed windows.

The robbery took place last Saturday (February 10), which would have been Betty’s late husband’s birthday. Betty’s family now say she is too terrified to live in her own home. Rebecca shared poignant photos of a teary-eyed Betty in her armchair surrounded by the mess.

They have launched a fundraiser to raise £1,000 for CCTV for Betty in order to help her feel more secure since the traumatic experience. Rebecca said: “My nan has lived in Shard End all her life and in the early hours of Saturday morning she walked in to see she had been broken into. Every door was smashed, every lock has been damaged.

"Not only did they take money and ransack the whole place, they then went on to be even more evil to put bleach all over her sofa, her clothes and up her curtains. My nan has always been a house-proud lady and always had a beautiful home and they have destroyed it.

”To say she is heartbroken is an understatement. She is 80 years old and now too scared to stay in her own home. I'm setting up this GoFundMe to try and help raise any money to help get my nan's home secure with CCTV to try and help her feel more safe. Please if anyone can help no matter how big or small will be forever appreciated.”

Locals were left shocked at the news. One person, called Trina, said: “The heartache and trauma this woman has gone through for selfishness and a laugh is beyond.” Another person said: “People make me sick, hope she’s alright.” Michelle Blackman said: “Why are people so evil.”

West Midlands Police told the Mirror: "We were called after a burglary at a house on Brook Meadow Road, Birmingham in the early hours of Saturday morning (10 Feb).
