The medical secretary had kept her past hidden and was left shocked when a stranger turned up on her doorstep, introducing herself as the wife of her child.

This sudden encounter gave Millicent the chance to meet her son Victor for the first time since he was a baby, and she was left emotional by getting the chance to form a relationship with him.

She also discovered that she had a grandson called Harry, who was studying in Liverpool.

But the sweet reunion came to a bitter end when the gran was told that her son had a life-threatening kidney disease.

In heart wrenching scenes, Millicent ended up tending to Victor in the last few days of his life.

They managed to catch up on the years of his life she missed before he passed away, leaving her crying: "I was there for his first breath and his last."

Call The Midwife viewers were overwhelmed by the tragic storyline, and took to social media to share their thoughts.

One person wrote: "Oh, Miss Higgins, my heart bleeds for you. Keeping that a secret for so long."

Another shared: "Why couldn't we have something happy for Ms Higgins absolutely balling my eyes out right now."

A third wailed: "This episode is absolutely wrecking me. I can't take anymore sadness."
