Cheryl Fergison has spoken out after spending an 'agonising' 24 hours in A&E.

The EastEnders icon, 58, also shared awful details about her condition, saying in a new social media video that she was in ‘complete agony’ and had ‘seen things in the last 24 hours that I cannot unsee’.

The soap star said in full: "Hi everyone, I’ve just spent the last 24 hours in A&E at Blackpool Victoria hospital. I’ve seen things in the last 24 hours [that] I can’t unsee. I’ve been in complete agony. I’ve been made a million times better by the angels that are all of the NHS staff which I wanna thank, like, big time. When people say they don’t get paid enough - they really don’t get paid enough. We’ve got a broken system. It’s gone to pot. It’s shot. But it’s still amazing and we still have it - just, by a thread. I wanna firstly say a huge thank you. I’m a lot better and when you sit for 24 hours in a chair in an A&E department being shipped off every six hours to go and get an IV, antibiotic drips, and come back again [video cuts off].”

Cheryl didn't specify exactly why she was taken to hospital and put on a drip, but her Instagram followers were quick to wish her well. One person wrote beneath her video: "Hope you feel better yes being a nurse I can tell you that we don’t get treated very well by the NHS."

Another added: "Hope you are feeling 100% again soon. The NHS is so brokwn and it is so sad what is happening. As an NHS nurse of over 30 yrs, I have seen so many changes. All we can do is carry on doing our best for our patients. Take care Cheryl." A third person echoed: "Hope you feel better soon , I had a stroke completely out of the blue six years ago and the NHS were there for me, can never thank them enough."

Cheryl's health scare comes after she claimed Paul O'Grady "would have definitely wanted" her to take over his For The Love Of Dogs show - not Alison Hammond.

The TV legend, who died suddenly last year, fronted the show for more than a decade and it was recently announced that This Morning regular Alison will carry on his incredible work when the show returns. But Cheryl thinks it should have been her taking over.

Alison will be heading to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home to help the animals in their care look for a new place to live, following the sad passing of much-loved presenter Paul last spring. But actress Cheryl said she has been "struggling to find work" ever since she was axed from the soap 12 years ago and in a bizarre video address to her followers on social media, claims she should have been given the nod because it is what Paul would have wanted.

Cheryl told fans: "You know, I can turn my hand to most things, I'm not begging for a job. I'm just telling you I'm perfect for a lot of jobs but you guys are not putting me up for them, letting me go for them, and I don't know why. I say good luck to Alison Hammond for getting For The Love Of Dogs.

"But I'm telling you now, Paul O'Grady would've definitely given me his blessing to do that job, because I have a dog, we've discussed our dogs quite a lot and I've always had dogs in my life, and erm yeah, dogs are the best, it's that simple," Cheryl, who played chaotic Heather Trott on the soap, made the remarks in a live-stream on Instagram.

Of her new role, Alison said: “I am very aware that I can never replace the iconic Paul in this wonderful series, but if I can continue to shine a light on the brilliant work done at Battersea and help to tell the stories of these beautiful dogs, then it will be an absolute privilege to give it my all. I can’t wait to share the joy of their searches for new loving forever homes and hopefully make lots of furry friends of my own along the way."

Mirror Online has reached out to Cheryl's reps for comment.
