The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are setting an excellent example for Prince Charlotte and Prince Louis, a royal expert has said.

In May 2023, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie were given their new titles in commemoration of the Duke's 59th birthday and have ramped up their royal duties whilst King Charles undergoes treatment for cancer. At the weekend, Prince Edward officially became the Colonel of the Scots Guard, after the Duke of Kent's last engagement in the position, The Daily Mail reports.

The royal couple went to a ceremony at Buckingham Palace last week in celebration of the 120th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale on the King's behalf. Royal expert Jennie Bond told OK! magazine that the couple are setting the "perfect example" for Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis about how to fulfil the role of the "spare" in the royal family dynamics. She said the Duke and Duchess have been "quietly devoted" to their specific causes for years.

The former BBC royal correspondent said: "As the King calls on them to take a more prominent role, Edward and Sophie are showing they are very much up to the task. They are also serving as excellent role models to their great nephews and niece - showing that you can be a "spare" or even a "spare to the spare" and make a real success of working as a valued member of the Royal Family."

The Prince and Princess of Wales have also removed themselves from the public spotlight as Catherine undergoes preventative cancer treatment, but they are said to be "acutely aware" of the difficulty royal "spares" can experience, and, according to Jennie, "will do everything to make Charlotte and Louis feel every bit as special, loved and valued as George".

When Prince Harry released his January 2023 memoir it was provocatively named "Spare" and triggered a series of controversial royal revelations. When speaking to The Telegraph, Prince Harry said he was worried about the future of other "spares" in the family. His intention was to share his own painful experience, for future generations to learn from.

He said: "Though William and I have talked about it once or twice, and he has made it very clear to me that his kids are not my responsibility, I still feel a responsibility. Out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare. And that hurts, that worries me." Now, with the most senior royals having to step back from their duties, Prince Edward has had to pick up some of the slack. He has been busy attending engagements, and also recently celebrated his sixtieth birthday. In a TV interview to celebrate the milestone birthday, he was interviewed by Alan Titchmarsh and said he felt a "weight of expectation" on taking over the title of Duke of Edinburgh from his father last year.

'It was a huge privilege, but also quite a lot of weight of expectation as well,' Edward said, as he marks his 60th Birthday. "I mean, there's an awful lot of legacy that came with that title and everything that my father had done, especially when you're not inheriting it - this is a choice. It's just the weirdest and strangest feeling."
