Kris Marshall has recalled that he narrowly avoided being kidnapped while filming a movie in the Congo.

The 51-year-old actor is famous currently for playing DI Humphrey Goodman in both of the BBC’s hit shows Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise, having played the role in the former from 2014 to 2017 and the latter since 2023. But Kris has had a busy and illustrious career including appearing on the BBC sitcom My Family from 2000 until 2005, the 2003 smash romantic comedy Love Actually, and the crime drama Murder City.

Back in 2011, Kris played a character named Larry in the film Oka! Amerikee - which was filmed in New York and the Central African Republic. The film itself was about a character named Louis Sarno, with the plot described as following Louis: “an American ethno-musicologist who lived among the Bayaka Pygmies in Central Africa for 25 years.”

Kris previously discussed filming Death In Paradise - which is recorded on location in the Caribbean. He explained that things could get quite rowdy while filming the show as the cast and crew would drink rum on Friday nights and party the night away.

He was then asked if things ever went spectacularly wrong on set following a night of heavy drinking. But opening up to the Irish Mirror, Kris confirmed: "We’ve been pretty lucky and not had any hurricanes, but a tree almost fell on me once.” Referencing his work on Oka! Amerikee, he said: “Nothing like when I made a film in Congo though. I got a parasite and had worms living in me, and every Sunday the army would come and kidnap someone. They’d turn up with grenades and guns, and just put you in the back of a car and go off until someone paid them. They got the make-up artist, and the producer four times. They came for me once but I’d gone swimming in the river."

He also reflected on the fact he enjoyed returning to the UK once filming on Death In Paradise was complete, saying: “Getting the ill-fitting linen off. It’s nice to wear my normal clothes. We come home in October so I put my scarf on, get my pint of Guinness, light the fire, sit on the sofa and put Strictly Come Dancing on. I love the dancing show.” However, he went on to reject the suggestion of ever taking to the ballroom floor.

More recently, Kris opened up about his involvement in Beyond Paradise - the first sting-off of the show. The BBC will air another Australia set spin-off, titled Return To Paradise, later this year. Appearing on The One Show, Kris said: "We're basically following Humphrey and his girlfriend Martha's journey as they move in with the mother-in-law down in the South West." He added: “I think it has an amazing foundation as it is part of the Death in Paradise universe, a franchise with a very strong following that is loved by audiences all over the world.”
