A single road has hundreds of potholes and is among the most cratered, damaged stretches in the country.

Glasgow City Council has been asked to mend a whopping 185 potholes on a two-mile stretch of Nitshill Road, which is known as the second worst road in the city. A freedom of information request showed the huge number of road problems that the council has been asked to sort out on the road in the south of the city.

From April 1, 2021 to February 24 this year, the council has had about 360 work orders for this road, with around a fifth being water related, including 50 reports of flooding and 26 of blocked drains. The council has also fixed pedestrian barriers 14 times and cleared up mess caused by accidents eight times, Glasgow Live reported.

Other jobs include regular maintenance like manhole covers, traffic lights or things listed as 'other'. But most of the work is fixing potholes on the road which runs just over two miles from Hurlet Road to Spiersbridge Roundabout.

Last January, Christine Boluk, who owns Prestige barbershop on Peat Road, called Glasgow 'pothole city' after her car was damaged when she drove through one on Nitshill Road. She expressed concern about the safety of her customers as well as kids and older people in the area after counting 30 potholes and seeing crashes caused by the bad road.

The 35 year old told Glasgow Live: "It's disgusting they are taking everybody's council tax and road tax off them, why in Glasgow are people paying tax for their vehicles? You may as well change Glasgow to pothole city. There's not one street without a pothole. I feel let down by the council."

Last March, Glasgow Live reported that the road had the second highest number of reported potholes in 2022 with 276. Great Western Road had the most with 378. Glasgow was named the pothole capital of Britain in January, with one pothole for every 86 people in the city, according to reports on FixMyStreet.com.

Data from Smart Survey shows 9,780 reports since 2007, and of those only 2,372 have been marked as 'fixed' on the site as of January 12 this year - that's about 11.7 unfixed problems for every 1,000 residents.

This weekend a councillor in the city claimed that the state of some roads in the south of Glasgow was causing serious damage to buses. Councillor Stephen Curran told Glasgow Times: “One of the concerns that people in the community have about these proposals is that although they might agree with the aspiration around the liveable neighbourhoods and the focus – there’s a reality check in the way they view the carriageways and footways in their own communities and the condition of those at present.

“The community council that covers Mansewood and Hillpark heard from PVT Transfer who now run the 29 bus service which is mentioned in the report – and they have only run it since Christmas – but they have already had three punctures, two broken springs and ticket machines have bounced and smashed out the cradle in the bus."

Glasgow City Council has been contacted for comment.
