Alan Titchmarsh eats same breakfast every day as he rants about 'insipid' avocado

Alan Titchmarsh revealed he eats the same simple breakfast every day as he complained about the 'carbon footprint' involved in eating avocado on sourdough bread.

The 74-year-old gardener and broadcaster is known for his incredible skills in horticulture and even grows his own produce at home. However, when it comes to breakfast, he likes to keep things simple with a bowl of £2.50 cereal such as Shreddies or Weetabix. He even went as far as to discuss his dislike for 'fancier' meals like avocado on toast.

Writing in Gardeners' World magazine, he said: "It seems there is a great movement towards smashed avocado on sourdough bread. I can't think of anything more insipid to force down my neck at the crack of dawn." He went on to explain the environmental impact of eating avocado.

He said: "I cannot reconcile myself to eating avocados and contributing to the enormous carbon footprint involved in shipping them across the ocean to my breakfast table, not to mention the wholesale destruction of the rainforest to create such plantations." He previously told the Telegraph about the chickens he keeps at home.

Alan said: “My reward is a fresh egg for breakfast every day, should I so wish, except from October to January when they go off lay." His hatred for avocado comes after it was revealed Alan's outfits were censored on North Korean TV.

The author's BBC series Garden Secrets airs on Korean Central Television (KCTV), with his calm personality and gardening expertise being well-loved in the country. However, his jeans were a clear problem as, unbelievably, the garment had been forbidden since the early nineties due to them supposedly being a symbol of US imperialism.

The episode in question, which first aired in the UK in 2010, saw him kneeling on the ground as he got to work with the gardening. He was wearing a checked shirt and rolled up his sleeves but that was deemed appropriate for North Korean audiences. His jeans, on the other hand, were blurred out but it was still obvious that he was wearing denim.

The channel has aired the episode about the 17th-century Hatfield House gardens several times since 2022. According to NK News, former leader Kim Jong Il told the citizens that jeans are “absolutely verboten and people should not wear them under any circumstances.”

His son, Kim Jong-un, even warned against allowing "bourgeois culture" and "anti-socialist behaviour". Alan previously shared his surprise at his programme airing in North Korea. He once said: "I never imagined that my programmes would reach North Korea, but hopefully the calming nature of British gardening will be well received there."
