Temperatures in Britain could reach 23C in mid-May as we head towards the summer, but unsettled weather conditions are set to continue over the next few weeks, a meteorologist has said.

Currently, the Met Office is not forecasting any major heatwaves, but there is a possibility of sunny spells mixed with colder conditions next month. Craig Snell, a senior meteorologist at the Met Office, said it is hard to know what the weather will look like over the summer but it is likely that warmer weather is on the cards.

Talking about the weather this week, the forecaster told The Mirror that parts of the UK, including the North West, will experience warm weather, with temperatures going up to the low 20s. Mr Snell said these temperatures are slightly above average for this time of year.

He said: "By the time it gets to mid-May, the UK average is approaching around 17C or 18C, and even in the next couple of days we will see temperatures getting to the low 20s. Certainly, as we go through the next couple of weeks we will see at times temperatures between 20C and 23C."

However, the meteorologist stressed that despite warmer weather at times, we will continue to see "a changeable pattern" as the Met Office does not expect a long spell of dry weather as of yet. He also added that at the moment, there is "no strong signal" of heatwaves or prolonged summer weather.

Mr Snell explained: "At the moment there's no strong signal of any prolonged dry spell. We'll continue to see a changeable pattern as we go through the beginning of May, so a continuation of what we have seen.

"Certainly at the moment there's no real strong signal of any kind of heatwaves or prolonged summer weather, but that doesn't mean that we won't see some spells of warm weather. But they will be a little intermittent and followed some unsettled weather, so typically spring weather. Where we are in this part of the world, seeing a changeable pattern is more likely than not."

The Met Office's long-range weather forecast from May 4 to May 13 says: "A fairly uncertain period through the bank holiday weekend with more likely a warm but cloudy period with bright spells, greatest in the north and showers more likely in the south. However there is also potential for a more unsettled spell to spread from the west with fresh winds and bands of rain mid-weekend, signals still unclear regards this.

"Into the new week all areas are likely to see a mixture of showery periods or spells of rain, though generally drier conditions expected. Overall, southern parts of the UK will probably be driest and sunniest with a north-westerly wind most likely bringing more changeable conditions across the north or northwest. Temperatures should remain close to or a little above normal for early May."
