As we make our way into the Easter weekend, there’s no better time to rustle up a delicious hearty hot cross bun bread pudding - and it’s so simple to make.

Many Brits will be tucking into their chocolate eggs on Sunday, but the special occasion can also be marked with a tangy treat too. In fact, recent Aldi research has revealed that the average person will consume at least five hot cross buns this year, equivalent to 336 million of the beloved treat.

While 45 percent of those surveyed opt for the classic seasonal staple with butter, the results suggested that foodies are looking for different ways to enjoy them. Fortunately, one social media creator has shared her cracking bread pudding recipe, made completely from hot cross buns.

Taking to TikTok, under the username @beaheaton, the dessert enthusiast wrote: "Happy Easter. Try out this hot cross bun bread pudding with your stale leftovers." Bea then shared her four-step guide to making the baked beauty, which can be found below.

  2. Next, pour your custard over the buns. Bea used Ambrosia light custard for this step.

  3. She then topped the dish in a generous serving of brown sugar and cinnamon, before baking it in the oven for 30-minutes.

  4. Finally, dish the dessert into a bowl and serve alongside some ice cream.

Impressed followers flocked to the comments to share their reaction to the delicious dish, as one user gushed: "I could eat the whole thing in one sitting," while another quipped: "Drooling." A third penned: "Would it be too sickly with cream instead of custard? Just a thought but that looks delicious." To which another user replied with: "You could make an egg, milk, and cinnamon mixture like you would with French toast and pour it over instead."

According to the Aldi research, hot cross buns topped with chocolate spread, lemon curd, and brandy butter are soaring in popularity. Meanwhile, other people prefer savoury options on their bun, including soft cheese and a cheese and jam combination.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: "While it’s apparent that classic rules, with most opting for a traditional hot cross bun with butter, it’s great to see that Brits are keen to get creative with different toppings and flavours."
