CHARITIES are spending thousands of pounds a year keeping retired SAS and SBS dogs alive.

The groups had to step in to cover the medical costs of the special forces canines to prevent them being put to sleep.

Many are trained to attack and cannot be rehomed as they are classed as too dangerous.

Belgian Malinois Kuno is being cared for via the SBS Association.

Now charity Hero Paws is raising cash to create a sanctuary in Fife for military and police dogs.

Founder Jaime Garner said: “Unfortunately the Army sees dogs as equipment rather than a living animal.

"So if it can’t be rehomed then it will be put to sleep.

"It’s the same if the dog has medical problems.

“We use our contacts to give these wonderful loyal animals a retirement they deserve.”
